Navy seizes foreign cannabis worth Rs. 38 million in Jaffna

The Sri Lanka Navy seized a consignment of foreign cannabis with an estimated street value of over Rs.38 million during a search operation in the Gurunagar lagoon area in Jaffna today, 24 September 2026. The operation also led to the apprehension of 1 suspect and a dinghy employed for this illegal act.

Naval personnel attached to SLNS Welusumana in the Northern Naval Command mounted the operation upon receipt of credible information. Accordingly, the Navy intercepted a suspicious dinghy operating in the Gurunagar lagoon. On inspection, naval personnel recovered over 192 kilograms of foreign cannabis packed into 88 parcels inside 7 sacks.

The suspect, the seized cannabis, and the dinghy were handed over to the Jaffna Division Crimes Investigation Bureau for further legal action
