SLNS Gemunu wraps up action-packed Inter-Command Swimming and Water Polo Championship
The Sri Lanka Navy Inter-Command Swimming and Water Polo Championship took place at the SLNS Gemunu swimming pool from 5th to 8th November 2024. In a captivating showcase of aquatic skill, Afloat Command clinched victory in the men’s swimming championship, while Eastern Naval Command excelled to claim the women’s title. Eastern Naval Command further asserted its dominance in water polo, securing both the men’s and women’s championships with exceptional performances.
In a competitive tournament showcasing the Navy's top swimming talent, the Training Command secured the runner-up title in the men’s championship, while the Northern Naval Command claimed the women’s runner-up position.
Sub Lieutenant KNT Perera from Afloat Command was named best male swimmer, while Woman Recruit RDS Rajapaksha of the Eastern Naval Command earned the title of best female swimmer for her outstanding performance. Captain RMTS Ranasinghe, representing the Western Naval Command, was honored as the tournament’s best veteran swimmer.
In the Water Polo Championships, the Eastern Naval Command emerged victorious in both the men's and women's divisions. The Training Command secured the runner-up position in the men’s category, while the Southern Naval Command claimed the runner-up spot in the women’s division. In water polo, Sub Lieutenant MDNL Ilukpitiya from the Afloat Command was recognized as the best player in the men’s category, and Woman Recruit WPPD Dissanayake of the Eastern Naval Command earned the best player title in the women’s category.
The prize giving ceremony of the Inter-Command Swimming and Water Polo Championship was held at the swimming pool premises of SLNS Gemunu, under the patronage of the Commander Western Naval Area Rear Admiral Chinthaka Kumarasinghe. The Flag Officer Commanding Naval Fleet, Commodore Sanjeewa Perera, Director Sports Commodore Marlon Perera and a group of officers and sailors were also present on this occasion.
