Navy basketball players shine at Inter-Command Basketball Tournament
In a thrilling display of athleticism and teamwork, the Navy Inter-Command Basketball Tournament reached its culmination at the Commander Parakrama Samaraweera Memorial Indoor Sports Complex in Welisara, spanning from the 24th to 30th October 2024. The men’s championship of the tournament was clinched by the Eastern Naval Command, while the Western Naval Command secured the women’s championship.
The tournament brought together talented players from all naval commands, showcasing their prowess on the court. The men's final, a face-off between the Eastern Naval Command and Naval Fleet Command, concluded with a resounding score of 88-58 in favour of the Eastern Naval Command. Accordingly, the Naval Fleet Command became the runner-up. The women's final, an encounter between the Western Naval Command and Southern Naval Command, concluded with a scoreline of 33-30 in favour of the Western Naval Command. Thus, the Southern Naval Command became the runner-up.
Individual excellence was also celebrated, with Lieutenant Commander Nipun Kiriella from the Eastern Naval Command being adjudged as the Best Player in the men's category. Meanwhile, Woman Leading Physical Training Instructor PGT Prasadini from the Western Naval Command earned the title of Best Player in the women's category. Recognizing emerging talents, Sub Lieutenant Lakmal Mabulage from the Eastern Naval Command was named the Emerging Player in the men's category, while Woman Ordinary Seaman PGS Tharaka from the Southern Naval Command secured the same title in the women's category. Meanwhile, the Veteran Player of the Tournament title was awarded to Captain Janitha Buddhika from the Western Naval Command.
The certificate awarding ceremony of the tournament was graced by the presence of Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Chinthaka Kumarasinghe.
