Victory wheels turn at SLNS Thambapanni in Inter-Command Cycling Championship 2024
The Inter-Command Cycling Championship - 2024 concluded triumphantly at SLNS Thambapanni on 28th September 2024. The exciting event featured fine competition among cyclists from different Naval Commands. The Eastern Naval Command claimed victory in the men's championship, while the North Central Naval Command took home the women's championship title.
Seventy-two (72) cyclists competed in the men's standard race, which began at SLNS Thambapanni, passed through Anamaduwa and Nikaveratiya, covering a total distance of 88 km, before finishing back at the starting point. Meanwhile, thirty-two (32) cyclists competed in the women's race, which began at SLNS Thambapanni, proceeded to Vallankulam, Kaladiya and concluded back at the starting point, covering a distance of 20 km. In the men's category, Able Musician LPNC Nandasiri from the North Central Naval Command claimed 1st place, Leading Seaman PHAR Chamara from the Eastern Naval Command took 2nd place, and Ordinary Seaman WADN Weerakoon from the Southern Naval Command secured 3rd place.
Similarly, in the women's category, Woman Able Seaman (Physical Training Instructor) HPS Madhumali from the Training Command secured 1st place, followed by Woman Ordinary Seaman RMID Rajaguru from the North Central Naval Command in 2nd place, and Woman Ordinary Seaman RGWH Wickramasinghe, also from the North Central Naval Command, in 3rd place.
Accordingly, in the 2024 Inter-Command Cycling Championship, the Eastern Naval Command claimed the men's team title as well as the runner-up position. Meanwhile, the North Central Naval Command secured both the women's team championship and the runner-up spot.
The event took place under the patronage of Rear Admiral Dhammika Wijewardena, Commander Northwestern Naval Area, with Commodore Anuruddha Karunathilake, Chairman of the Navy Cycling Pool, in attendance. It was also graced by a group of officers and sailors representing the Cycling Pool and Naval Commands.
