Spectacular play marks conclusion of Navy Inter-Command Rugby Tournament

The Navy Inter-Command Rugby Tournament - 2024 came to an exhilarating close at the rugby ground of SLNS Gemunu, showcasing the exceptional sporting prowess of naval personnel. The three-day event, held from 24th to 26th July 2024, witnessed intense competition among Naval Commands, with the Afloat Command emerging as the men's champions and the Western Naval Command clinching the women's championship.

The finals, held on 26th July, witnessed an impressive display of skill and determination by the teams. In the men's championship, the Afloat Command dominated the game, securing a victory over the Southern Naval Command with a scoreline of 17-12. The Western Naval Command secured the third place in the tournament, adding to the competitive spirit on display.

The women's final was an encounter between the Western Naval Command and the Northern Naval Command. Showing dominant performances, the Western Naval Command emerged victorious, defeating their opponents 05-00. The Training Command secured the third place in the women's championship, highlighting their sporting capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Naval Command secured the Plate Championship, while the North Central Naval Command emerged as the winners of the Bowl Championship, adding to the diversity of accomplishments throughout the tournament.

In recognition of their remarkable contributions, individual players were honoured with prestigious awards. Accordingly, Lieutenant MMS Kumarathunga of the Afloat Command was named the Player of the Tournament in the men's category. In the women's category, Recruit SMNI Malindi from the Northern Naval Command was bestowed with the Player of the Tournament award.

The final day of the tournament was graced by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Pradeep Rathnayake, as the Chief Guest. The Commandant Volunteer Naval Force, Rear Admiral Nilantha Hewavitharana, Chairman of the Navy Rugby Pool, Commodore Sanath Pitigala, senior officers and a group of sailors were also present on this occasion.
