Navy wins runner up title in Intermediate Boxing Championship – 2024
The Sri Lanka Navy won the runner up title in the Intermediate Boxing Championship – 2024 organized by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL). The tournament was held in the Royal MAS Boxing Arena from 15th to 18th July 2024.
The Intermediate Boxing Championship attracted the best boxing talent from various clubs and associations across Sri Lanka. Twenty-nine (29) boxers represented the Navy in thirteen men's weight classes and four women's weight classes. For the Navy, Able Infantryman SI Ranmal secured a gold medal in the under 51 kg weight class, Leading Seaman SMCS Samarakoon claimed gold in the under 63.5 kg weight class, and Leading Seaman WDK Jayasinghe earned a gold medal in the under 71 kg weight class.
Moreover, Woman Stores Assistant KMMG Konara (over 50kg weight class), Able Seaman KH Navodya (over 57kg weight class) and Leading Infantryman PMM Deepthiwardana (under 67kg weight class) won silver medals.
In addition, Leading Infantryman KMGG Chathuranga (under 54kg weight class), Ordinary Seaman SGDS Bandara (under 57kg weight class), Petty Officer RMJ Sameera (under 67kg weight class), Leading Seaman (Provost) ALGM Bandara (under 71kg weight class), Able Seaman (Provost) HMSMP Herath (under 75kg weight class), Able Seaman (Physical Training Instructor) AWE Madushan (under 81kg weight class), Ordinary Seaman JP Kaushalya (under 81kg weight class), Woman Ordinary Seaman KADM Supimal (under 48kg weight class), Woman Writer RMSS Rathnayaka (under 52kg weight class) and Woman Ordinary Seaman PSD Pathirana (under 60kg weight class) won bronze medals. The trophy for the best loser of the tournament was won by Able Seaman KH Navodya.
Under the auspices of Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, the Commander of the Navy and President of the Navy Sports Board, special programmes are being implemented to advance the Navy's sports sector. These initiatives have created more opportunities for Navy athletes to achieve success.
