Western Naval Command wins Inter-Command Football Championship - 2024

The Inter - Command Football Championship – 2024 was held at the soccer ground of Welisara Naval Complex from 07th to 13th June 2024. The overall championship of the tournament was won by the Western Naval Command.

The championship saw intense competition among all naval commands, with their teams vying for the coveted title. The final of the tournament was held on 13th June between the Western Naval Command and the Eastern Naval Command. In the final match, the Western Naval Command emerged victorious, securing the win with a decisive 2-0 score. Accordingly, the Eastern Naval Command became the runner-up and the second runner-up title was won by the Training Command.

A retired and serving veterans’ football encounter was also held in conjunction with this tournament, and the serving veterans’ football team won the game 2-1.

The trophy for the Emerging Player of the Tournament was won by Ordinary Seaman BGA Navod from the Eastern Naval Command. Petty Officer PAE Uddeepa from the Western Naval Command won the trophy for the Best Goalkeeper. In addition, Lieutenant SI Weerasinghe from the Western Naval Command was adjudged the Best Player.

The prize awarding ceremony of the tournament was held under the patronage of Director General Services, Rear Admiral Priyal Vithanage. Senior and junior officers of the Western Naval Command, retired senior officers and sailors were also present on this occasion.
