Navy bags bunch of medals in National Karate Championship 2024
The men’s and women’s karate teams of the Sri Lanka Navy won 04 gold medals, 03 silver medals and 09 bronze medals in the National Karate Championship 2024, held at the Bandaragama Indoor Stadium from 27th to 29th April 2024.
In the 55kg Black Belt division, Leading Seaman TKH Lakmal demonstrated his prowess, earning a well-deserved bronze medal. Other notable achievements include Leading Seaman SS Jayaweera and Leading Seaman HSC Weerakoon's silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the 60kg Black Belt category, as well as Leading Seaman STS Samarasekara's bronze medal in the 75kg Black Belt division. Leading Seaman RDAC Perera emerged as a standout performer, securing the gold medal in the 84kg Black Belt category. Leading Seaman WR Kumara also contributed to the Navy's medal tally with a bronze in the Kata Black Belt event. The team also performed admirably in the Team Kata Open event, with Petty Officer KMH Gunasinghe, Leading Seaman KAJ Hemal, Leading Seaman WR Kumara, and Leading Seaman BM Senarathne combining their skills to secure a bronze medal.
Among the other highlights, Able Seaman RMRK Jayasooriya clinched the bronze medal in the 55kg Brown Belt (Level 4) category, while Petty Officer AMSK Bandara secured another bronze in the 67kg Brown Belt (Level 4) division. In the over 84kg Brown Belt (Level 4) category, Leading Communicator RNP Chandrasekara seized the gold medal, with Leading Chef MP Pushpalal closely following with a silver medal. Additionally, in the Kata Brown Belt (Level 4) division, Petty Officer RPSC Jayawardana and Leading Seaman ADNS Ariyarathne both earned bronze medals, adding to the Navy's impressive tally.
Leading the charge, Woman Able Seaman KAC Dulanjalee secured the gold medal in the below 68kg Black Belt category, demonstrating her exceptional martial arts abilities. Additionally, Woman Able Seaman GS Praboda showcased her talent by clinching another gold medal in the below 68kg Level 4 category. In the over 68kg Level 4 category, Woman Leading Seaman RDD Gunawardana displayed immense skill and determination, earning a well-deserved silver medal.
