National Sailing Championship concludes on successful note
The National Sailing Championship concluded on a triumphant note in the scenic waters of Crow Island, Mattakkuliya on 19th and 20th January 2024. The event was graced by the Deputy Chief of Staff and Director General Operations, Rear Admiral Pradeep Rathnayake. The Navy secured numerous victories during the championship, further enhancing their commendable record in sailing.
A number of athletes from renowned sailing clubs across the island, including the Navy Sailing Pool, took part in the tournament, conducted for both men and women. In the ILCA 6 Open event the 1st place was secured by Petty Officer PDDS Rajapaksha. Meanwhile in the Wind Surfing event the 1st and 2nd places were won by Leading Seaman KPP Gunawardana and Petty Officer WAS Weerathunga respectively. In addition, the 1st and 2nd places in the ILCA 7 event were won by Leading Infantryman UD Rajapaksha and Petty Officer PDDS Rajapaksha respectively.
Further the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the GP 14 event were won by Petty Officer WAS Weerathunga and Leading Infantryman GPP Karunarathna, Leading Seaman KC De Soysa and Leding Engineering Mechanic TDS Perera and Leading Seaman AMJP Aththanayaka and Leading Seaman AS De Soyza. In the same vein, the first three slots in the Enterprise event were won by Leading Infantryman JHMPI Jayapadma and Leading Seaman SPPN Kumara, Leading Seaman KSK De Silva and Able Seaman UGD Madusanka and Leding Engineering Mechanic JPS De Silva and Able Seaman LACM Gunathilaka.
Retired senior naval officers, Secretary General the National Olympic Committee, Mr Maxwell de Silva, Chairman Sri Lanka Navy Sailing Pool, Captain Chaminda Gunarathna, officers and sailors were also present on this occasion.
