Medal winning Navy athletes on global stage recognized with cash prizes
Sri Lanka Navy medalists in international sports events met with the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera at the Navy Headquarters on 16th January 2024. Recognizing the exceptional international sporting accomplishments of Navy athletes that have brought honour to the nation, the Commander of the Navy who is also the President of Navy Sports Board awarded them significant cash prizes.
Accordingly, Leading Seaman EADKD Egodawatta and Woman Ordinary Seaman BC Priyanthi who won silver medals in weight lifting at the Commonwealth Games 2023 in India and Leading Seaman DMIC Dissanayake who won a bronze medal in the same tournament received cash prizes. In the same vein, Commander of the Navy also presented cash bonuses to Woman Leading Seaman I Ranaweera, Woman Leading Seaman KDU Prabodani, Woman Ordinary Seaman GAWHM Perera and Woman Ordinary Seaman HMD Samarawickrama who won silver medals in cricket at the Asian Games 2023 held in China.
Moreover, Woman Petty Officer GTA Abeyrathna who won bronze medals in the 800m and 1500m events at the Asian Games held in Thailand in 2023 as well as Woman Ordinary Seaman BSL Mendis who won silver and bronze medals in 4x400m relay at the Asian Games 2023 and 19th Asian Athletics Championship held in China were recognized with cash prizes.
During this event, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera acknowledged and appreciated the remarkable achievements of the Navy athletes. Their excellence not only brought positive recognition to the nation but also garnered them a well-deserved respect.
