Navy basketball players shine at Inter-Command Basketball Tournament
In a thrilling display of athleticism and teamwork, the Navy Inter-Command Basketball Tournament reached its culmination at the Commander Parakrama Samaraweera Memorial Indoor Sports Complex in Welisara, spanning from the 06th of November to the 02nd of December 2023. The men’s championship of the tournament was clinched by the Training Command, while the Western Naval Command secured the women’s championship.
The tournament brought together talented players from various naval commands, showcasing their prowess on the court. The men's final, a face-off between the Training Command and North Central Naval Command, concluded with a resounding score of 53-45 in favour of the Training Command. Accordingly, the North Central Naval Command became the runner-up. The women's final, an encounter between the Western Naval Command and Training Command, concluded with a scoreline of 28-04 in favour of the Western Naval Command. Thus, the Training Command became the runner-up.
Individual excellence was also celebrated, with Midshipman UADVS Samarasekara from the Training Command being adjudged as the Best Player in the men's category. Meanwhile, Woman Leading Seaman WDS Prabhumali from the Western Naval Command earned the title of Best Player in the women's category. Recognizing emerging talents, Midshipman WMGT Weerakoon from the Training Command was named the Emerging Player in the men's category, while Woman Ordinary Seaman PIS Perera from the Western Naval Command secured the same title in the women's category. Meanwhile, the Veteran Player of the Tournament title was awarded to Captain IHJ Buddhika from the Afloat Command.
The certificate awarding ceremony of the tournament was graced by the presence of Deputy Area Commander Western Naval Area, Commodore Buddhika Rupasinghe. Commander AV Saudaraja, Chairman of the Navy Basketball Pool as well as officers and sailors from various naval commands were also present on this occasion.
