Inter-command Badminton Championship - 2023 concludes in Welisara
The Inter-command Badminton Championship - 2023 was held at the Commander Parakrama Samaraweera Memorial Indoor Sports Complex in Welisara from 06th to 10th March 2023. The prize awarding ceremony held on 10th March was graced by the Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Suresh De Silva.
The Training Command crowned men's champions in the Inter-command Badminton Championship and the Western Naval Command settled for its runner-up position. Meanwhile, the women's championship was won by the North Central Command and its runner-up title was secured by the Western Naval Command.
In the men's novice category, the championship was won by Lieutenant DWIU Wimalaguna and the runner-up position was secured by Recruit GMJH Thilakaratne. Meanwhile, Woman Ordinary Seaman KGS Rasanjali won the women’s novice championship and its runner-up position was won by Woman Ordinary Seaman AN Sasanga.
In the open men’s singles, the championship was won by Sub Lieutenant HOT De Silva and Lieutenant WM Fernando became the runner up. In the open men’s doubles the championship was clinched by Lieutenant WM Fernando and Sub Lieutenant HOT De Silva. The runner-up slot of the event was won by Lieutenant Commander CMDA Chandrasekara and Lieutenant Commander KKR Rathnayake. In the open women’s singles, the title was won by Woman Able Physical Training Instructor AGAC Wijerathna. Meanwhile, the second place of the event was won by Woman Leading Physical Instructor HPM Hapugaspitiya. The championship title of the open women’s doubles was bagged by Woman Leading Physical Instructor HPM Hapugaspitiya and Woman Able Physical Training Instructor AGAC Wijerathna. Woman Leading Physical Instructor GHGS Udari and Woman Able Seaman MHN Herath won the runner-up title in the same event.
In the over 40 age category, the championship was won by Lieutenant Commander RRCL Jayathilake and the runner-up position was secured by Commander WAC Gunarathne. Meanwhile, in the over 40 doubles, Commander WAC Gunarathne and Commander HAD Fonseka won the championship and Commander TR Sahabandu and Lieutenant Commander RRCL Jayathilake became the runners-up. Lieutenant Commander KGSP Wijerathna won the title in the over 50 category and the runner-up title in the same category was won by Commander PG Wijewardena. In the over 50 doubles, the championship was secured by Commodore WDCU Kumarasinghe and Captain HMBP Herath. The runner-up title in the same category was won by Commodore LMH De Silva and Commodore RK Wettesinghe.
Director Sports, Commodore Roshan Athukorala, senior officers from the Western Naval Command and a group of officers and sailors were also present on this occasion.
