Navy emerge champion in handball at Defence Services Games
The men’s team of Sri Lanka Navy emerged champion in handball at the 12th Defence Services Games 2022/23. The tournament was held on 09th 10th and 11th November 2022 at the ‘Airport Sports Complex’, Minuwangoda.
The handball tournament of this year’s Defence Services Games was organised by the Sri Lanka Navy. The Navy team was through to the final edging out the Sri Lanka Air Force. In the final encounter the Sri Lanka Navy beat the handball team of Sri Lanka Army 35 – 28 and clinched the championship. Further, the achievement also recorded as the first gold medal to the tally of the Navy in Defence Services Games.
The Chief Guest of the final match was Director Sports of the Sri Lanka Navy, Commodore Roshan Athukorala, who gave away awards to the champions and outstanding players of the tournament. Accordingly, Leading Physical Training Instructor Prasad De Silva (Best Attacker), Able Seaman Sanjeewa Silva (Best Goal Keeper) and Leading Seaman Pradeep Wijendra (Best Player) received respective awards.
Officers and other ranks from the tri services and a group of athletes were also present on this occasion.
