12th Defence Services Games declared open
The 12th Defence Services Games was officially declared open by the Secretary of Defence, General Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) at the new indoor stadium of Panagoda Army camp on 19th October 2022. The ceremony, which marked the beginning of several weeks of competitive sportsmanship among tri-services, was attended by Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne.
The athletes produced by the armed forces make a special contribution to bring national and international sports achievements to the motherland.
Thus, the twelfth edition of the Defence Services Games 2022/2023 will provide an opportunity to unearth new talents from the tri-services, who will also have the opportunity to compete at the national and international levels in coming years.
Under the able directives and guidance of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, who is also the President of Navy Sports Board, the Navy has made a number of facilities and welfare provisions available for the progress of sports in the organization. Making use of these amenities, the Navy sportsmen and sportswomen have qualified themselves to take part in the Defence Services Games which will be a nice springboard for them to leap into the national and international level.
Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana, senior and junior officers from the tri-services and athletes of the armed forces were also present on this occasion.
