Navy nabs 03 suspects in northern waters for bird smuggling racket

During a search operation conducted in the sea area of Kachchativu, Jaffna on 14 Jan 26, the Sri Lanka Navy thwarted a smuggling racket involving 237 pet birds and apprehended 03 suspects and a dinghy employed for this illegal act.

After detecting a suspicious dinghy in the Kachchativu sea area, the Naval Detachment of Kachchativu under SLNS Wasaba in the Northern Naval Command mounted this search operation. During the operation, naval personnel seized the suspicious dinghy with 237 pigeons and apprehended the 03 suspects in connection to the act of smuggling.

The suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of the Delft Island, aged between 25 and 41. The suspects together with birds and the dinghy were handed over to the Delft Police Station for onward legal action.
