Navy intercepts local fishing trawler smuggling a haul of methamphetamine and heroin, with 06 suspects

Acting on credible information, the Sri Lanka Navy launched a special operation on the high seas on 11 Apr 25, apprehending 06 suspects along with a local multi-day fishing trawler, believed to be involved in smuggling of narcotics. Subsequently, the intercepted trawler was brought to Dikkowita Harbour, where a thorough inspection was carried out with the assistance of Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) experts, leading to uncover approximately 77kg and 484g of heroin and 42kg and 334g of methamphetamine (Ice). The consignment, which had been meticulously hidden in the trawler, was handed over to the PNB for onward legal action on 12 Apr.

On 12 Apr, the Commander of the Navy conducted an inspection of the seized haul of narcotics at Dikkowita Harbour. During the visit, he commended the naval personnel and other stakeholders involved in the operation, acknowledging their efforts in ensuring its successful execution.

Speaking on this occasion, the Commander of the Navy credited reliable information from international and local sources, along with collaborative efforts, for the Navy’s successful high-sea drug raid. He further emphasized the fishing community’s vital role in boosting the national economy and ensuring food security. As such, the Sri Lanka Navy remains committed to safeguarding fishermen’s livelihoods by providing necessary support. Additionally, the Navy is closely monitoring and combating narcotic and arms smuggling involving a small segment of the fishing community, he added.

Moreover, he said that in alignment with the government's vision of “A Dignified Life - A Strong Country” the Sri Lanka Navy is working closely with domestic and international intelligence agencies, maritime stakeholders and local law enforcement agencies to crack down on smuggling of narcotics. These ongoing operations aim to bring offenders to justice, safeguarding future generations from the dangers of narcotics and the societal harms of drug abuse. The Navy's efforts support the national goal of achieving a “A Drug-Free Country - A Healthier Citizen Life”. In this backdrop, the Navy Chief urged fishing community to abide by the law and fulfill their civic duty to protect the nation's future generation from the dangers of drug abuse.

The Commander of the Naval also stated that ongoing operations are being conducted in coordination with various stakeholders, leveraging both local and international networks, to combat illegal activities. He stressed that drug smuggling disguised as fishing operations or any form of support for such crimes will not be tolerated. He also went on to say that the Navy remains committed to intensifying these efforts to apprehend those involved and safeguard national security, with continued operations.
