A suspect held with 1180 conch shells in Kalpitiya

The Navy and Police arrested an individual (1) for the unlawful possession of about 1180 conch shells, during a search operation conducted in Vannimundalama area of Kalpitiya on 30th October 2024. The concealed stash of conch shells awaiting transport, without a license.

The search operation was carried out by SLNS Vijaya in the Northwestern Naval Command, with the assistance of Kalpitiya Police. The stash of about 1180 conch shells awaiting transport, without a license, was found stored in a house in the area. The operation also led to the apprehension of a suspect (1).

The arrested suspect was identified as residents of Mandalkuda area in Kalpitiya, aged 52. The suspect, along with conch shells, was handed over to the Kalpitiya Police for onward legal action.
