Navy nabs 02 persons for illegal night diving in the eastern seas

The Navy apprehended 02 persons who engaged in illegal night diving in the sea area of Sallikovil, Trincomalee, during a search operation conducted on 21st October 2024. The operation also led to the seizure of 01 boat, diving gear and fishing equipment used for this illegal activity.

The Navy carries out regular operations in the coastal and sea areas around the island, with a view to prevent illegal fishing practices of a handful of individuals who disregard the sustainability of marine ecosystems by engaging in illegal practices.

In continuation of these efforts SLNS Vijayaba in the Eastern Naval Command carried out this operation in the sea area of Sallikovil. During the operation, naval personnel intercepted a suspicious boat and apprehended these 02 persons for engaging in illegal night diving. In addition, naval personnel also held several diving gear and fishing equipment.

The suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Salli Sampalthivu, aged 39 and 57. The suspects along with the boat and other seized belongings were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Trincomalee for onward legal action.
