Twenty-five persons nabbed for engaging in illegal fishing
The Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 25 persons for their involvement in illegal fishing using unauthorized nets, during search operations conducted in the sea areas of Trincomalee on 28th September 2024. The operation also resulted in the seizure of 05 dinghies and unauthorized fishing gear.
The Sri Lanka Navy maintains a vigilant stance, actively engaging in operations to combat illegal fishing within its sea and coastal regions. This initiative aims to endorse and support legal fishing activities.
As an extension of these efforts, SLNS Vijayaba of the Eastern Naval Command apprehended 12 persons and seized 03 dinghies, for their involvement in illegal fishing using unauthorized nets, during search operations conducted in Salli Sambaltivu and Pigeon Island sea areas in Trincomalee.
In another search operation off Chapel Point, Trincomalee, SLNS Mahaweli and Sri Lanka Naval Dockyard of the Eastern Naval Command held 13 more individuals and 02 dinghies, while they were engaging in fishing with banned fishing nets.
The persons apprehended during these operations were identified as residents of Kinniya, Erakkandi and Thambalagamuwa, from 19 to 43 years of age.
Those individuals along with the dinghies and fishing equipment were handed over to the Fisheries Inspectors of Trincomalee and Cod Bay for onward legal action.
