The Sri Lanka Navy recovered a cache of explosives during a search operation conducted in the South Bar area of Mannar on 05th August 2024. The explosives included 60 gelignite sticks – a type of commercial explosive, 30 non electric detonators and 350g of C4 explosives. Additionally, the Navy apprehended a cab (01) at the scene, suspected of transporting these explosive materials.
The Navy stays ever alert and conducts regular search operations to prevent illegal fishing practices carried out using explosives, as such activities deal a heavy blow to the marine ecosystem.
In a similar effort, SLNS Gajaba in the North Central Naval Command made this recovery after a search operation carried out in the South Bar area. The search operation led to the recovery of 60 gelignite sticks, 30 non electric detonators and 350g of C4 explosives and the cab left behind at the location. Accordingly, the items were taken into naval custody.
It is believed that these explosive items have been hidden at the location, to be used for illegal fishing using explosives. The explosive items and the vehicle were handed over to the Mannar Police for onward legal proceedings.
