Two (02) suspects with about 702kg of smuggled Tendu leaves held in Puttalam

A search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy in the Daluwa area of Puttalam on 15th June 2024 resulted in the apprehension of 02 suspects and the seizure of approximately 702kg (wet weight) of Tendu leaves, suspected to have been smuggled into the country. Additionally, the Navy also confiscated a three-wheeler made ready to transfer the consignment.

The Sri Lanka Navy conducts regular search operations and patrols in the coastal areas of the island, with a view to prevent the influx of a wide range of illegal items into the island.

As part of these ongoing efforts, SLNS Thambapanni, under the Northwestern Naval Command, conducted a search operation in the Daluwa area. During the operation, the Navy apprehended 02 suspects preparing to transport Tendu leaves hidden in nearby shrubs. The seized consignment weighed approximately 702kg (wet weight) and was packed in 19 sacks. Additionally, the operation led to the confiscation of a three-wheeler used in the illegal activity.

The suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Mannar and Madurankuliya, aged 42 and 44. The suspects along with the stock of Tendu leaves and the three-wheeler were handed over to the Excise Department of Puttalam for onward legal action.
