Navy nabs 08 persons for engaging in illegal fishing in eastern waters
The Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 08 persons for their involvement in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets, during a search operation conducted in Upparu sea area of Muthur on 14th April 2024. A dinghy (01) and unauthorized fishing equipment used for this illegal act were also taken into the naval custody, during this operation.
The Sri Lanka Navy remains vigilant and conducts operations to combat illegal fishing in its sea and coastal areas, with a view to supporting legal fishing activities.
As an extension of these efforts, SLNS Parakumba in the Eastern Naval Command conducted a search operation in the Upparu sea area where the suspicious dinghy was spotted. After conducting a more thorough search of the dinghy, naval personnel apprehended eight individuals who were involved in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets. The suspects were taken into custody, along with their fishing gear and the dinghy.
The persons held in this operation are residents of Kinniya area, who are from 23 to 63 years of age. The individuals along with the seized items were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Muthur for onward legal action.
