A suspect with Kerala cannabis valued over Rs. 10 million held in Welioya

A coordinated operation conducted by the Navy and Police STF in Nikawewa of Welioya in the dark hours of 26th March 2024, led to the arrest of a suspect and seizure of over 27kg of Kerala cannabis.

The combined search operation was carried out by SLNS Ranweli and SLNS Gotabaya in the Eastern Naval Command with Mullaitivu Police STF in Nikawewa area. During this operation, a person roaming in the area was interrogated on suspicion and 13 parcels of Kerala cannabis were recovered from nearby shrubs, as revealed by the suspect. The consignment of Kerala cannabis, made ready for sale, weighed about 27kg and 185g.

The gross street value of seized Kerala cannabis is believed to be over Rs. 10 million.

The suspect held in this operation was identified as a resident of Nikawewa area, aged 43. The accused, along with Kerala cannabis was handed over to the Welioya Police for onward legal action.
