Navy apprehends 02 suspects with stock of insecticide in Kalpitiya

A search operation carried out by the Navy off Uchchamunai in Kalpitiya on 03rd March 2023, resulted in the apprehension of 02 suspects for smuggling a stock of insecticide via sea.

The Navy remains vigilant around the clock and conducts regular search operations and patrols to prevent the influx of illegal items into the island via sea routes.

In continuation of these efforts, SLNS Vijaya in the Northwestern Naval Command spotted and intercepted a suspicious dinghy in Uchchamunai sea area. During further search of the dinghy, naval personnel found 16 suspicious sacks which had been stuffed with insecticide. The stock of insecticide comprised 4000 vials (100ml) and 6534 packets (10g). The operation also led to the apprehension of 02 suspects and seizure of the dinghy which was used to smuggle those items.

The suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Wannimundalama in Kalpitiya, aged 33 and 44. The two (02) suspects along with the dinghy and the stock of insecticide were handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Katunayake for onward legal action.
