Navy pressed into action to clear blockage under Dodamgoda and Wakwella Bridges in Galle
The Sri Lanka Navy on 02nd and 03rd November 2023 cleared the blockages under the Dodamgoda and Wakwella Bridges which are over Gin River in Galle, ensuring the free flow of water downstream.
Following heavy rains, tree remains and other debris carried by raging waters of Gin River collect under those bridges, hampering smooth flow of river water. Remaining ever alert to these developments, the Southern Naval Command cleared the blockages beneath the bridges, averting possible flood threat in the area.
Accordingly, a team of Navy divers and members of the Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) from the Southern Naval Command were mobilized to remove the obstructions beneath the Dodamgoda and Wakwella Bridges. The effort was well supported by the Irrigation Department and Disaster Management Centre. Their swift action ensured that river water could continue to flow downstream without interruption, effectively preventing a potential flood hazard in the region.
