Navy pressed into action to clear blockage under Wakwella Bridge in Galle

The Sri Lanka Navy on 29th September 2023 cleared the blockage under the Wakwella Bridge which is over Gin River in Galle, ensuring the free flow of water downstream.

Following heavy rains, tree remains and other debris carried by raging waters of Gin River collect under the Wakwella Bridge, hampering smooth flow of river water. Remaining ever alert to these developments, the Southern Naval Command cleared the blockage beneath the bridge, averting possible flood threat in the area.

Accordingly, a team of Navy divers and members of the Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) from the Southern Naval Command were mobilized to remove the obstruction beneath the Wakwella Bridge. The effort was well supported by the Irrigation Department and Disaster Management Centre. Their swift action ensured that river water could continue to flow downstream without interruption, effectively preventing a potential flood hazard in the region.
