A cab used to smuggle drugs in disguise and 05 suspects held in Jaffna
A combined search operation mounted by the Navy, Police and Police STF in Urumpirai, Jaffna on 29th and 30th August 2023 led to the seizure of a cab used to smuggle drugs. The naval and STF personnel also held 05 suspects, a motorcycle (01), and Rs. 15 million during this operation.
The Navy often renders its assistance to law enforcement agencies to prevent illegal activities.
Based on information received by the Navy, the combined search operation was carried out by SLNS Uththara and SLNS Welusumana in the Northern Naval Command with the Jaffna Police and Police STF in Urumpirai area on the night of 29th August.
During this operation, security personnel conducted a search of a roadside cab based on suspicion. The vehicle was apprehended due to the presence of a specific compartment that is believed to have been designed for drug smuggling. Additionally, collaborating efforts of the Navy, Police and Police Special Task Force resulted in the apprehension of three individuals who are under suspicion of being involved in drug trafficking.
Based on information divulged by those suspects, a separate search was carried out in Urumpirai and Madagal areas on 30th August. The operation led to the apprehension of 02 more suspects in connection to drug smuggling, 01 motorcycle and Rs. 15 million.
The suspects held in these operations are residents of Madagal, Urumpirai and Uwa Kudaoya areas, from 22 to 53 years of age. The suspects along with the vehicles and money were handed over to the Kopai Police, Jaffna for onward legal action.
