Navy takes hold of poaching trawler with 09 Indian fishermen in Delft sea area

A search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy on 20th June 2023 off Urimunai of the Delft Island, Jaffna led to the interception of an Indian poaching trawler (01) with nine (09) Indian fishermen.

The special search operation was mounted by SLNS Wasaba in the Northern Naval Command, in Urimunai sea area south of Delft Island, by deploying naval craft. During this operation, the Navy intercepted an Indian poaching trawler (01) continued to remain in the sea area, with nine (09) Indian fishermen aboard.

It was revealed that the poaching trawler was in the sea area having experienced a mechanical failure with seepage of sea water to its engine, while poaching in Sri Lankan waters off the Delft Island. The poaching trawler along with 09 Indian fishermen was handed over to the Delft Police for onward legal proceedings.
