A person held for engaging in illegal fishing in eastern waters

A coordinated operation conducted by the Navy and the Office of Mullaitivu Fisheries Inspector in Thuduwa area, Pulmoddai on 22nd March 2023 led to the apprehension of a suspect engaged in illegal fishing without valid pass. Along with the suspect, a dinghy and fishing equipment used for the illegal act were also taken into custody.

The Navy conducts regular operations in the coastal and sea areas of the island in order to suppress illegal fishing activities performed by people with scant regard towards responsible fishing practices. In a similar operation, naval personnel attached to SLNS Ranweli and officials of the Office of Mullaitivu Fisheries Inspector nabbed the suspect who was engaging in illegal fishing in Thuduwa area.

The suspect held in the operation is a resident of Mullaitivu, aged 28. Meanwhile, the suspect along with the dinghy and fishing gear was handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mullaitivu for onward legal action.
