Navy takes hold of over 1797kg of smuggled Kendu Leaves in Negombo
A special search operation carried out by the Navy in Duwa area, Negombo on 30th December 2022 led to the seizure of a lorry transferring over 1797kg of smuggled Kendu Leaves and apprehension of a suspect involved in the illegal act.
Sri Lanka Navy vigilantly patrols the coastal regions of the island, thwarting a variety of illicit endeavours taking place via sea routes. Upon receipt of information to the Naval Intelligence, this special search operation was mounted by SLNS Kelani in the Western Naval Command, with the assistance of Expeditionary Task Force, in Duwa area of Negombo on 30th December. The search led to the interception of a suspicious lorry which had been loaded with 58 packages of Kendu Leaves. The smuggled consignment of Kendu Leaves weighed about 1797kg. During this search, the Navy also nabbed a suspect in connection to the incident.
The suspect was identified as a resident of Negombo, aged 44. The accused along with the stock of Kendu Leaves and the lorry was handed over to the Customs Preventive Office – Katunayake for onward legal action.
