MRCC Colombo renders assistance to rescue a group of distressed fishermen in Arabian Sea

Ship MT-ALTAIR rescued 05 persons in distress aboard a local multiday fishing trawler that went into a mechanical failure, while in Arabian Sea on 20th June 2022. The rescue was coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo established at the Navy Headquarters.

The local multiday fishing trawler, leased to an Oman agent, left the Dikowita Fisheries Harbour with five crew members on 06th June 2022 to reach the Port of Duqm in Oman. Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources on 17 June informed MRCC Colombo established in the Navy Headquarters that the multiday fishing trawler was in distress due to a mechanical failure while sailing in the Arabian Sea.

Responding promptly to the developing situation, MRCC Colombo informed MRCC Pakistan and MRCC Mumbai about the multiday fishing trawler in distress. As a result, MRCC Mumbai has directed the MT-ALTAIR, an oil tanker to assist the distressed fishing trawler and the tanker managed to rescue the five crew members from the defunct local multiday fishing trawler on 20th June.

Remaining true to its duty, the MRCC Colombo established in the Navy Headquarters works in full swing to assist naval and fishing communities in distress at sea, in close coordination with regional MRCCs.
