Navy assists apprehension of suspect with commercial explosives in Kinniya
The Navy and Police managed to apprehend a suspect (01) with commercial explosives known to be water gel and safety fuses, during a coordinated operation carried out in Kinniya, Trincomalee on 24th February 2021.
A special operation conducted by the Eastern Naval Command and Trincomalee Police led to the recovery of 37 water gel sticks - a commercial explosive type and 206 foot-long safety fuses made ready to be sold, after searching a suspicious house in Kinniya area. Along with the explosive items a 42 year old suspect was also held during this operation. The Navy suspects that these water gel sticks and safety fuses, which are generally being issued as a commercial explosive for quarrying related industries, were made ready to be sold for those engaging in illegal fishing with such explosives.
The operation was conducted adhering to health and safety guidelines stipulated for the prevention of COVID-19 and the suspect along with explosive items was handed over to the Police Station, Headquarters Trincomalee for onward legal action.
