Navy assists seizure of hidden explosive items and locally made gun

The Navy and Police have seized several hidden explosive items and a locally made gun, during two separate operations conducted at Athawetunuwewa, Padaviya and Nanattan, Mannar on 18^th and 19^th October 2020.

Incidentally, the Eastern Naval Command in coordination with the Police STF in Pulmoddai managed to recover two (02) 81mm mortar grenades, seven (07) 60mm mortar grenades and one (01) anti-tank pressure mine (08kg) hidden in a shrub in Athawetunuwewa area. It is suspected that these items might have been abandoned in the area by the LTTE during the period of Humanitarian Operation. In another search operation conducted in Nanattan, Mannar the North Central Naval Command, also found a locally made gun from a thicket nearby.

Meanwhile, the seized explosive items and the locally made gun were handed over to the Police STF in Pulmoddai and Parayanakulam Police station respectively for onward investigations.
