Commander of the Navy presides over commemoration of naval war veterans in Welisara
A solemn ceremony to commemorate fallen Navy war veterans who made the supreme sacrifice for the defeat of terrorism that battered the country nearly three decades, was held under the patronage of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne at the Naval War Hero Monument in Welisara today (19th May 2021).
In its fight against terrorism, 1160 Navy war veterans have made the supreme sacrifice and 517 naval personnel were disabled, for the defence of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation. Glorifying the memory of these true sons of the nation, Commander of the Navy made his mark of respect to fallen naval combatants, paying floral tribute at the Naval War Hero Monument, Welisara. Thereupon, Vice Admiral Ulugetenne took time off to visit the Anchorage Naval Care Centre in Welisara where he shared a light moment with differently abled naval personnel occupying there. The occasion was also attended by the President Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Chandima Ulugetenne.
The event was organized adhering to COVID-19 protocols in force, to attest the transmission of the pandemic and it was attended by Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Ruwan Perera, Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Upul De Silva, Naval Officer in Charge Welisara Naval Complex, Commodore Rohitha Abeysinghe and a limited number of officers representing the Navy Headquarters and Western Naval Command.
