Commander of the Navy marks 36 years of service amid spiritual settings
Several religious programmes organized in marking the 36 years of illustrious naval career of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, were held at Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy and Gangaramaya Temple in Hunupitiya, Colombo on 06th and 07th January 2020.
Having joined the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet of the 13th Intake on 07th January 1985, he underwent basic naval training at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee. Upon successful completion of training, he was commissioned as a Sub Lieutenant in the year 1987. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks in the Navy over the years, he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 01st June 2015. Reaching the pinnacle of his naval career, he became the 24th Commander of the Navy, after being promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral on 15th July 2020.
Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne specialized in the fields of Gunnery and Missiles and was a key member of the pioneering team that introduced missiles to the Navy Fleet. Further, Vice Admiral Ulugetenne has also been awarded a bunch of service medals for his invaluable contribution to the freedom of the motherland from the 30-year scourge of terrorism as well as for his acts of bravery in combat.
Marking the distinguished service to which he was committed over the past 36 years, Commander of the Navy paid homage to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (06th January) and called on Anunayake Most Venerable Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero of the Hunupitiya Gangarama Temple and engaged in a Bodhi Pooja Pinkama Ceremony there today (07th January) to invoke the blessings.
The religious observances held at Hunupitiya Gangarama Temple were also attended by beloved wife of Commander of the Navy and President of Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Chandima Ulugetenne, their daughter, father and personal staff of Commander of the Navy.
