Navy helps avert flood threat in low-lying areas around Gin Ganga
Following the incessant downpour received over the past couple of days, the Wakwella and Dodamgoda bridges in Galle collected tree remains and debris underside, posing a flood threat in the area. Responding promptly to this adversity, the Navy last week was pressed into action to ease the possible flood situation, by removing waste collected under those bridges.
Owing to the torrential rains receiving in the south-western part of the island a swelling of water level in the Gin Ganga was observed and the situation triggered a possible flood threat in the area, as a large amount of tree remains and debris collected under several bridges flying over the river.
In this backdrop, a group of Navy divers attached to the Southern Naval Command was hurried to respective locations to clear-out those blockages, at short notice. After hours of strenuous effort caught in heavy swell, the naval personnel removed those obstructions and helped swift downstream of river water, alleviating the inundation.
The community in the area could heave a sigh of relief, as the Navy managed to avert the possible flood threat in low-lying areas. Meanwhile, the Navy has kept its relief teams standby to cope with any eventuality in coming days.
