Navy swimming teams secure championship and runner-up titles in 12th Defense Services swimming and water polo tournament

The swimming and water polo tournament of the 12th Defense Services Games was held at the swimming pool of SLNS Gemunu from 05th to 09th June 2023. In an impressive display of aquatic prowess, the Sri Lanka Navy women’s team won the swimming championship of the tournament. Meanwhile, the men’s team also secured the runner-up position.

Accordingly, the gold medals in the 100m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke as well as silver medals in the 800m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle were won by Woman Ordinary Seaman LCN Fernando. Also, Woman Ordinary Seaman VN Kaluarachchi won the gold medal in the 50m backstroke and silver medals in the100m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 100m freestyle. In addition, Woman Ordinary Seaman TN Hettige won the silver medals in the 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly.

Director General Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Rear Admiral Wiraj Leelarathne graced the finals of the swimming and water polo tournament as the Chief Guest. Director Sports, Commodore Roshan Athukorala, Chairman of Navy Aquatic pool, officers from the tri-services and a group of other ranks were also present at the event.
