Sacred journey, sustainable path: Navy’s eco-effort on pilgrim route

The Sri Lanka Navy stepped in to support both devotees and the environment during the annual Paada Yaathra pilgrimage through Kumana National Park to Kataragama.

Beginning on 20 Jun 25, the Navy provided assistance to pilgrims undertaking the sacred journey. In parallel, the Southeastern Naval Command initiated a special environmental conservation drive on 25 Jun to protect the ecosystem of the national park.

As a key partner of the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, the Navy frequently engages in eco-friendly programmes, to promote sustainable habits and inspire communities to take responsibility for surroundings.

The conservation initiative was strengthened through a collaborative effort involving personnel from SLNS Mahanaga, the national park authority and the Department of Forest Conservation. Working together, they helped sustainability of the park’s biodiversity by clearing non-degradable waste.

Beyond waste management, the initiative also aimed to raise awareness among pilgrims and locals about the importance of environmental conservation in daily life. The Navy’s efforts highlighted the need for sustainable practices, during such events.
