Navy joins forces to keep beaches clean under “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative
As part of the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, the government initiated a national beach cleaning programme for creating beautiful beaches under the theme “A Beautiful Beach - An Attractive Tourist Destination”. In alignment with this effort, the Sri Lanka Navy extended its all-out support to the coastal cleanup programmes launched today (09 Feb 25) in the Western and Southern Provinces.
As a key partner of the “Clean Sri Lanka” national initiative, the Sri Lanka Navy conducts comprehensive coastal cleanup programmes across the island. In continuation of these efforts, naval personnel rolled up their sleeves for the inaugural event which took place at the Crow Island beach in Mattakkuliya, under the patronage of the Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. In addition, the Navy also threw its weight behind beach cleaning programmes conducted at Port City, Galle Face, Port of Colombo, Wellawatta and Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle and Hambantota Districts.
The efforts successfully removed a significant amount of waste, including plastic and polythene debris scattered along the coastline. The Navy ensured the collected waste was responsibly disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
In addition, as part of the "Clean Sri Lanka" campaign, the Sri Lanka Navy organized a coastal cleanup drive on 08 and 09 Feb. The initiative targeted beach areas stretching from Vankalei, Thalpadu to Oluthudai, as well as from Talaimannar Lighthouse to Piregama.
