Rear Admiral Rohitha Abeysinghe appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy

Rear Admiral Rohitha Abeysinghe was appointed as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy effective from 05th November 2024. The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera formally handed over the letter of appointment to Rear Admiral Rohitha Abeysinghe at the Navy Headquarters today (08th November) and expressed his best wishes to the newly appointed Deputy Chief of Staff.

Rear Admiral Rohitha Abeysinghe is a proud product of Kingswood College, Kandy. He joined the Executive Branch of the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet of the 8th intake of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) in 1990. After successful completion of his basic naval training at the KDU and Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee he was commissioned in the rank of Sub Lieutenant in 1992.

He completed his Sub Lieutenant Technical Course from the Naval and Maritime Academy in 1995 and received his specialization in Navigation and Direction from INS Venduruthy, India in 2002. In addition, he completed the Staff Course at Naval Command and Staff College Nanjing, China in 2008. The senior officer holds a Master’s in Defence Management and Security Studies from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. Additionally, he completed the National Security and Strategic Studies course at National Defence College (NDC), Sri Lanka. Progressing steadily in his naval career, the senior officer was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 18th December 2022.

During his distinguished naval career, Rear Admiral Rohitha Abeysinghe has held a range of commanding roles onboard Fast Attack Craft, ships and at establishments across the country. Among some of the other key appointments he held; Command Operations Officer and Command Intelligence Officer (West), Training Commander at Naval Recruit Training Centre Sampoor, Directing Staff of Naval Wing at Defence Services Command and Staff College, Port Facility Security Officer (Puttalam) and Supervising Officer Inshore Patrol Craft Training Centre, Deputy Director Naval Operations, Deputy Director Marine Special Forces, Naval Officer in Charge (Welisara), Deputy Area Commander Western Naval Area and Port Facility Security Officer (Colombo), Director General Training and Commander Northern Naval Area stood prominent.
