Commander of the Navy presides over closing of VNF Annual Training Camp 2024 in Welisara

In a dignified sequence, the inspection of divisions of the Volunteer Naval Force (VNF) Annual Training Camp was held at the VNF Headquarters on 24th October 2024. At the invitation of the Commandant VNF, Rear Admiral Lashanth N Hewavitharana and Commanding Officer VNF, Commodore Susantha Dharmasiri the occasion was graced by the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, as the Chief Guest.

The Volunteer Naval Force’s distinctive tradition involves hosting the Annual Training Camp and inspection of divisions, which serve to enhance the professional skills and knowledge of its naval personnel. Commenced on 04th October, this year’s Annual Training Camp was attended by 45 officers and 408 junior and senior sailors.

Upon his arrival at the VNF Headquarters, the Commander of the Navy was received by the Commandant and Commanding Officer of the Volunteer Naval Force. He was then escorted to the main dais, where a ceremonial Guard of Honour was presented in accordance with naval traditions. Following this, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera conducted an inspection of the divisions.

Following the effective conclusion of training programmes, held for three-weeks, VNF personnel equipped with the necessary theoretical and practical skills for their roles in the Navy. The occasion was also made more colourful with a dazzling cultural show which marked the end of the proceedings of VNF Annual Training Camp 2024.

Addressing the esteemed audience, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera expressed his honour at being present for this significant event as the Chief Guest. Adding more he highlighted that the VNF Annual Training Camp and inspection of divisions is a long-standing and unique tradition. He noted that the Volunteer Naval Force, which began with just 24 officers and 121 sailors, has significantly expanded to 383 officers and 10,353 sailors to meet the growing demands of national security and development. He also emphasized the Volunteer Navy's professional contributions in various fields, supporting the Navy’s overall mission.

Moreover, Vice Admiral Perera commended the invaluable role of the Volunteer Naval Force since its inception in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity, while also contributing to national development. He also highlighted the awarding of the President's Colour to the Volunteer Naval Force in 2023 as a significant milestone in its distinguished history. The Navy Chief further acknowledged the achievements of the VNF personnel in sports, which have brought pride to both the Navy and the nation. On the other hand, he recognized the technical expertise and contributions of VNF personnel across various specialized fields, which have strengthened the Navy’s operations.

In line with Sri Lanka's goal of becoming a developed nation, the Sri Lanka Navy is implementing its strategic 2030 plan, developed through a scientific approach to future transformation. This plan focuses on maintaining optimal manpower, integrating new technologies, and enhancing operational capabilities. The Commander of the Navy emphasized that achieving these objectives will require the full commitment and active participation of all VNF personnel.

The Commander of the Navy emphasized that the Annual Training Camp plays a vital role in developing disciplined and efficient naval personnel by enhancing the practical skills and knowledge essential for fulfilling the Navy’s duties effectively. He also paid tribute to the VNF personnel who sacrificed their lives or were wounded in action while defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing heartfelt gratitude to their families and loved ones.

The Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, Director Generals, flag-ranking officers, senior officers from the Navy Headquarters and Western Naval Command, former Commanding Officers of the Volunteer Naval Force and a group of naval personnel were present on this occasion.
