4 FAF veterans wound in action in line of duty honoured for their bravery
A ceremony to felicitate wound in action (WIA) veterans of the 4th Fast Attack Flotilla (4 FAF) was organized for the first time at the 4 FAF War Monument in. the Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee on 19th October 2024. At the invitation of Commanding Officer 4 FAF, Captain Athula Jayaweera, the ceremony was graced by Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Damian Fernando.
The Sri Lanka Navy was instrumental in ending nearly three decades of terrorism in the country, securing a decisive victory in the humanitarian mission for freedom. Thus, the invaluable contributions of naval personnel, who courageously fulfilled their duty, even at the cost of their lives, to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the motherland, will be remembered forever.
In recognition of its vital role in maintaining maritime security in the North and East, the 4th Fast Attack Flotilla (4 FAF) of the Sri Lanka Navy has carried out numerous courageous missions. Today’s event, held to honour flotilla’s brave sons, saw 01 officer and 41 sailors, who were discharged due to action-related disabilities, were fittingly recognized for their service.
The ceremony began with Rear Admiral Damian Fernando paying solemn floral tributes at the 4 FAF War Monument, honoring the sacrifices of fallen heroes. Following this, esteemed veterans of the 4 FAF who attended this distinguished event reciprocated the gesture, honouring their fallen comrades.
A discussion programme was also held at the Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda Auditorium, where veterans who attended the ceremony shared their wartime experiences with young officers and sailors serving the 4 FAF today. The session highlighted the dedication of the 4 FAF members, emphasizing their rigorous training, exceptional physical and mental fitness, teamwork, quick and decisive actions in challenging situations, leadership, patriotism, discipline, and invaluable combat experience.
The Deputy Area Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Varuna Ferdinandusz, officers and sailors from the Eastern Naval Command and 4 FAF were also present on this occasion.
