Navy conducts CBRN training programme in Hambantota

The Sri Lanka Navy's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit stationed at Hambantota conducted a CBRN exercise at the Oil Pier of Hambantota International Port on 26th September 2024.

Going by the directions of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera this programme was initiated by the Sri Lanka Navy's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit. The primary aim of this exercise was to augment the awareness and readiness levels of the first responders and the relevant officials of Sri Lanka Ports Authority including the Fire Service.

During the theoretical training session, participants were briefed on detecting, identifying, and safely managing chemical hazards, while the practical session focused on hands-on experience with safety equipment, emergency procedures, including evacuation, and proper disposal of hazardous chemicals.

It is noteworthy that the Sri Lanka Navy has established CBRN Units at all principal harbours across the nation, including Colombo, Galle, Hambantota, Trincomalee, and Kankasanthurai. These units boast well-trained first responders poised to swiftly address any CBRN incident transpiring within harbour premises and territorial waters.
