Navy conducts beach cleaning programme parallel with International Coastal Cleanup Day
The Sri Lanka Navy partnered with the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) to conduct a beach cleaning programme on 10th and 11th September 2024. The initiative, set in motion in parallel with the International Coastal Cleanup Day, was held at the Sinnamugaththuwaram and Arugam Bay beaches.
The beach cleaning efforts were organized by SLNS Mahanaga and SLNS Deegayu, under the supervision of Commander Southeastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Thushara Karunathunga. Those who were engaged in the cleaning efforts removed a large amount of plastic, polythene and solid waste from the coastal environments.
Officers and sailors from the Southeastern Naval Command, officials from MEPA and a group of Sri Lanka Army personnel took part in this worthy cause.
