Navy constructs narcotics incineration facility in Puttalam

The Sri Lanka Navy enabled its manpower and industrial expertise to construct a facility for incineration of narcotics which are seized during operations. The facility made available in Wanathavilluwa, Puttalam was declared open by the Minister of Public Security, Hon. Tiran Alles on 18th May 2024.

To combat drug trafficking within the country, the government incurs substantial costs in the destruction of narcotics seized during operations conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy, the Police Narcotics Bureau, the Police Special Task Force, and police stations across the island. Alternatively, at the directives of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera who is also the Chairman of the Task Force to Combat the Use of Poisonous and Dangerous Drugs, construction of the incinerator and associated infrastructure commenced in August 2023.

The Navy also played a crucial role in constructing the necessary building facilities for the installation of generators required for the incinerator's operation, as well as in the construction of the main gate, security fence, and landscaping work.

The Commander Northwestern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Nalindra Jayasinghe, senior naval officers and government officials were also present on this occasion.
