JMSDF AKEBONO (DD 108) departs after her formal visit

Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) destroyer AKEBONO (DD 108) which arrived in Trincomalee on 28th October 2023 on a formal visit, departed the island today (31st October). The Sri Lanka Navy bade a customary farewell to the departing ship in accordance with naval traditions at the Trincomalee harbour.

On her departure, JMSDF AKEBONO (DD 108) conducted a successful Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with SLNS Shakthi. In the PASSEX, Communication Training and Tactical Maneuvering Training exercises were conducted and it concluded with the customary cheer ship salute.

Meanwhile, the Commanding Officer of the ship, Commander Hisato SOTOKAWA called on Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Suresh De Silva in the Eastern Naval Command Headquarters and Commandant Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA), Commodore Buddhika Liyanagamage at NMA on 30th October.

Personnel of the ship also engaged in a Visit Board Search & Seizure (VBSS) training programme at the Special Boat Squadron Headquarters in Trincomalee. During the ship’s stay in Trincomalee, the crew of JMSDF AKEBONO (DD 108) visited several tourist attractions of the country.

Port calls made by foreign naval ships play a crucial role in fostering collaboration among naval forces. Additionally, these visits facilitate naval exercises and training activities, allowing the exchange of knowledge and information about their unique maritime environments. Also, this exchange can be particularly beneficial in addressing shared maritime challenges.
