JMSDF ship SAMIDARE (DD-106) departs after successful naval exercise
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Destroyer SAMIDARE (DD-106) which arrived in Colombo on 20th July 2023 on a formal visit, departed the island today (29th July). The Sri Lanka Navy bade a customary farewell to the departing ship in accordance with naval tradition at the port of Colombo. SAMIDARE (DD-106) arrived in Sri Lanka with a view to strengthening cooperation with partner navies in the Indo-Pacific region.
On her departure, JMSDF Destroyer conducted a successful Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with SLNS Gajabahu. In the PASSEX, Communication Training, Tactical Maneuvering Training, Information Exchange Exercises were conducted, and it concluded with the customary cheer ship salute.
Meanwhile, the Commander, 01st Surface Group and Flag Officer of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) SAMIDARE (DD-106), Rear Admiral NISHIYAMA Takahiro and Commanding Officer of SAMIDARE (DD-106) Commander OKUMURA Kenji called on both Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera at the Navy Headquarters and Commander Western Naval Area, at the Western Naval Command Headquarters.
Meanwhile, personnel of the Sri Lanka Navy had the opportunity to visit the JMSDF Destroyer during its stay in Colombo. In addition, a culinary event featuring Japanese and Sri Lankan cuisine was also onboard.
Further, a team of SAMIDARE (DD-106) played a friendly football match with the Sri Lanka Navy, demonstrating exceptional sportsmanship. The crew members of the ship also visited the Borella Cemetery to honour the spirits of Japanese nationals who died during World War II. In addition, they visited some of the tourist attractions in the country as well.
Visits of this nature will be a valuable tool in promoting cooperation among naval forces. Apart from that, naval exercises and other training engagements conducted during such visits help share knowledge and information about their respective maritime environments, which can be particularly valuable in dealing with common maritime challenges.
