U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka visits newly inaugurated Diving Club at Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee

The U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, H.E. Juli Chung visited the newly established ‘Malima Diving Club’ at the Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee on 15th July 2023. The occasion was attended by the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and a group of senior officers from the Eastern Naval Command.

Going by a visionary concept of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, this Diving Club was established at the Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee. The objective of this initiative is to establish essential facilities for diving enthusiasts to observe significant historical maritime artifacts, including shipwrecks, cannons, and anchors, within Trincomalee harbour and surrounding waters. The Trincomalee coastline is renowned for its exceptional diving opportunities, featuring stunning coral reefs, shipwrecks, and diverse marine species. Establishing diving clubs and amenities for tourists to explore the underwater marvels of Trincomalee harbour and its surrounding waters would significantly boost tourism in the area and bring foreign currency to the country.

Prior to her visit to the Diving Club, H.E. Juli Chung also took time off to visit the Diving Unit in the Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee. During this visit, the Ambassador inquired about the role of the Diving Unit and showed interest in receiving a briefing from the Navy Commander, regarding the Recompression Chamber.

In addition, H.E. Juli Chung visited the Naval and Maritime Academy – the premier establishment for naval training in Trincomalee. She shared a light moment with the Commandant Naval and Maritime Academy, Commodore Buddhika Liyanagamage, directing staff and officer under trainees, regarding training matters. The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and Commander Eastern Naval Command and Commandant Volunteer Naval Force Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara were also present on this occasion.
