Sri Lanka Navy conducts awareness programme for potential boat builders in Welisara
The Directorate of Naval Design (DND) functions under the Engineering Directorate of the Navy successfully conducted an awareness programme for potential boat builders in Sri Lanka. The programme was conducted at the Naval Boat Building Yard in Welisara on 03rd April 2023.
At the directives of Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and under the supervision of Director General Engineering Rear Admiral Ravi Ranasinghe, DND plays a key role in developing craft that are tailored to the specific needs of the Navy. The awareness programme also focused on promoting the capabilities and supporting the industry in their boat design work.
During the event, the participants involved in boat building industry locally were educated on the evolution of DND since 2010, its state-of–the-art technology used in design work and availability of software and skilled manpower.
The boat building industry is an emerging export sector venture, and a much-needed blue economy for the country. In this backdrop, the Navy plans to develop DND to be the best state-owned ship design office in Sri Lanka by 2025.
