A mangrove nursery declared open in North Central Naval Command
The Commander North Central Naval Area Rear Admiral Prasad Kariyapperuma today (20th February 2023) declared open a mangrove nursery established in the Command, as part of the Mangrove Conservation Project of the Sri Lanka Navy.
Going by the directive of Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, the Navy plays a prominent role in mangrove conservation. Accordingly, the Navy carries out a number of programmes in which mangroves are restored and conserved in estuaries, lagoons and coastal saline in Naval Commands across the country.
The newly opened mangrove nursery is located at Naval Detachment Urumalai belongs to SLNS Thammanna in the North Central Naval Command. The nursery houses 2400 mangrove saplings which are expected to be planted in estuaries and lagoon areas in the North Central Naval Command.
A group of senior and junior officers, sailors as well as members from a private firm that provided technical expertise to set up the nursery were present on this occasion.
